MAD's Conrad Hotel broke ground today, April 22nd, in East Beijing's CBD area. The 106 meter tall, platinum five star hotel offers an alternative vision for CBD design. The regularity of the urban grid is subverted by the melting facade. The curvature of the building gives way to irregularity and to patterns from the natural world, not the man-made. In this shift, we see the potential for greater changes to the urban condition. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2012.
